A practical Q&O guide to choosing a ChatGPT Project or Skill

Custom GPT Migration 101

OpenAI currently schedules Custom GPT retirement for 11 December 2026. If you rely on a GPT you built, planning its next home now can help you keep that workflow going.

Keep a current copy of your Brand Brain Form and Folders somewhere you control. If we set them up for you, copy them into your own workspace. They give you the business context to review the migrated Skill or rebuild your workflow in a Project if migration isn’t available in your account.

A future ChatGPT setup can draw on your Brand Brain even when the assistant or account features change or if you decide to change to another Platform / Large Language Model (LLM) like Claude, Perplexity, Grok etc.... Platforms evolve. Your Brand Brain should be saved where it can go with you. Please find our guide below to help you migrateb your GPT or book into our course on 28th November here if you'd like to learn about new Chat GPT features.

Give each part of the work its own place

It helps to separate the business knowledge from the tool that uses it. The Brand Brain is your reference point.

A Project keeps one stream of work together.

A Skill captures a method you want to reuse (like a reusable prompt).

Part

What it contains

When it helps

Brand Brain

Your organisation, audience, services, voice, priorities, boundaries, examples and approved information.

The reference point you can bring into different tools.

Project

Project instructions, related chats and files held together around a piece of work.

An ongoing campaign, event, client or content plan where details develop over time.

Skill

A reusable method with instructions and supporting examples or resources.

A focused task you repeat, such as shaping an approved brief into several content formats.

A Skill is not automatically the best home for every Custom GPT. If you need related chats and changing files for a campaign, start with a Project. If the same task follows a dependable sequence each time, a Skill may suit it better. Either way, begin with accurate Brand Brain information.

Choose the route for your ChatGPT account

OpenAI has currently scheduled Custom GPT retirement for 11 December 2026.

Only affected Enterprise workspaces with a qualified, approved deferral may have until 11 February 2027.

Check the notice in the account or workspace where the GPT was created.

ChatGPT Business

Open the Business workspace where the GPT was created.

In My GPTs, choose Migrate to plugin if it is available.

Review the new Plugin: the instructions become a Skill, knowledge files become reference files, and connected apps may be included. It starts private, so check access before asking colleagues to switch. If migration is not visible, read the workspace notice or ask your administrator about Plugin access.

Business users are eligible for ChatGPT Skills where workspace settings allow them. To create a separate Skill, go to Plugins, open the Plugin Directory, choose Skills, then Create and Create with chat.

See OpenAI’s Skills guide for the current options.

ChatGPT Pro

The current ChatGPT Skills page lists Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu, but not Pro. Check your account notice for migration.

For a setup you can use now, choose New project in the sidebar, add instructions and approved files, then start a chat inside it. Projects are available to signed-in ChatGPT users, subject to plan availability and workspace settings. This gives your work a new home, but does not copy a GPT.

OpenAI’s Projects guide shows the current setup.

ChatGPT Enterprise

Ask your workspace administrator who can migrate the GPT, whether Plugins and Skills are enabled, and which sharing rules and dates apply. As checked on 1 October 2026, OpenAI lists 26 October as the planned end of creating new GPTs in affected Enterprise workspaces. Dates can change; follow your workspace notice. The Custom GPT migration FAQ has the current dates and qualifications.

Test it with one piece of upcoming work

Choose a real task due soon, such as turning an approved event brief into a newsletter and three social captions. Set up a Project around it:

  • Create a Project. Choose New project in the sidebar and give it a name that describes the work, such as “Event content”.

  • Add the course foundations. In Project settings, note the audience, voice, required format and what ChatGPT should confirm. Upload your current Brand Brain and approved files.

  • Use a real brief. Start a chat in the Project, add the event details and ask for the first deliverable. Keep the request specific enough that you can judge the result.

  • Compare and refine. Check facts, tone and format against your course examples. Correct instructions or source material if something is missing or out of date.

Treat migration as a first draft

Built-in migration uses the latest published GPT version. Draft edits, old conversations and sharing settings do not transfer so make sure you save any important information somewhere. Custom actions need a separate setup.

Review the new Skill and files, then test familiar tasks.

See the migration FAQ for the full details.

You do not need every assistant to behave exactly as before. Start with one task that matters this week and make it reliable.

Your Brand Brain captures the organisation, voice and judgement you want ChatGPT to support.
